Bridging the Gap Between the Hearing & Deaf Worlds
Since lip reading (or speech reading) is common for those who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing, what is it like for those who are unfamiliar with it and never uses it?
This post will explain my own personal experiences of lip reading plus look at removing the myths (like you can read lips from across the room 🙄) and also share some tips and advice on how to make it easier for the lip reader.
After several years hiatus, I have gone back to the cinema to watch the new Star Wars movie, which also happens to be the first time ever I watched a movie with captions.
This post is not a review of the movie nor will there be any spoilers. It’s just a personal story of how it went for me and what could be done to make the cinema experience even more accessible for more people.

A common difficulty for many parents or students to make is to decide which school to apply and attend.
But it’s a completely unique and different set of challenges for d/Deaf or hard of hearing students. It’s not about deciding which school to go to, but rather whether to go to a mainstream or deaf school.
But to help you go in the right direction, it’s crucial to understand the difference between mainstream school and deaf schools, whilst also understanding the pros and cons of both types of schools.

Do you have the habit of apologising for not being able to hear someone and you end saying “sorry” because you feel that it’s your fault.
Don’t worry if that applies to you, as I am also very guilty of saying the above and more over the years.
And personally, I believe should all stop over-apologising, as it having negative consequences to our lives.
For many people who are considered to be small ‘d’ deaf and particularly those who are hard of hearing, we are constantly labelled as being “not deaf enough” for the d/Deaf world, and “not hearing enough” for the mainstream hearing world.
The only place left is that awkward middle bit, the intbetweener, the lonely bit, where it is tough because you don’t feel like you belong anywhere.

Those challenges are likely to be amplified at mainstream schools (though deaf schools also have their own unique challenges too).

You are probably aware of the words ‘captions’ and ‘subtitles’ and at first glance, they may appear to be identical.
But they’re not.
So what are the differences between the captions and subtitles? And did you even know that there are differences?
For most, if not all d/Deaf and hard of hearing people, social events can be an awkward one and a difficult one at the same time.
If everyone is talking and the environment is not right, then it’s very easy to feel secluded and left alone.
But what if you, as a hearing person, want to prevent that? How can you help to make a d/Deaf/hard of hearing person feel included, at least as much as possible?
