Even though I have been learning BSL (British Sign Language) for a few months now, I was thinking about ways to make myself accountable.
It’s so easy to trail off your latest interests, passions and hobbies after the initial excitements. It’s no surprise that many people give up their New Year resolutions in February every single year.
Thankfully for me, I have continued to keep learning BSL but in order to keep myself accountable and also document my progress, I have decided to start ‘My BSL Journey’, which will document my journey as I learn British Sign Language
Now I should warn you that I’m still just a beginner. I’ve been learning my using a combination of an online tutor, Facebook groups, online courses and watching BSL Zone.
But it doesn’t matter how much you learn, like anything, if you don’t practice, you will never learn nor get better.
And that’s why I decided to bare all in my first video in BSL (or perhaps SSE, Sign-Supported English, as I’m not following the correct grammar that exists within BSL).
So be kind.
Watch the video below of my first video in British Sign Language.
But if you have any helpful comments or constructive criticism about my signing, feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
Hi, how are you? My name is Ahmed.
And, yeah, this is my first video in BSL, or, British Sign Language. I’m nervous.
But I want to start this video, named ‘My BSL Journey’. I want to learn BSL because 1) I love languages. I…yeah…languages, I just love it.
But, I want to communicate with deaf people and my hearing is going down and, in the future, it’s going to get even worse. It’s going to deteriorate.
So, I started ‘My BSL Journey’ ’cause I want to practise, I want to learn, I want to communicate, yeah, I just love languages too.
I use sign language, but, I actually use SSE, or Sign-Supported English, not BSL. It’s different.
Both languages you sign, but they’re different, they have different grammar. It’s unique. So, I sign in SSE, and in BSL. It’s, yeah, I think it is.
I plan to continue to learn, to learn the grammar of BSL, I want to improve my sign.
So, yeah, I only started recently. I’m only a beginner
So, you know, be nice, okay? Be nice. As I go on my BSL journey, I hope you will also join me too on my journey.
I hope so, anyway.
But thank you and I’ll see you soon.
